The Closing of Rockland Elementary

Update!

A decision was made not to close Rockland at this time.

******************* *********************** ************************ ******************* **********

At the last Education/Co-curricular Meeting, the school administration recommended to temporarily close Rockland Elementary. The district would like a decision from the school board by February, so plans can be made on how to structure the grade levels into the other elementary buildings. The closure of this school is projected to save the district $100,000 to $120,000 per year. No estimate was given as to how long the school would remain closed.

Full Day Kindergarten

The Director of Curriculum, Dr. Martin, gave a presentation on the implementation of full day kindergarten. The district currently receives grant money that is typically used to reduce class sizes. Instead of using the funding for reduced class sizes it can be used to offer full day classes. This would mean larger class sizes and the need to restructure teachers and classrooms to accommodate \ the children. There is no guarantee that the block grant funding will continue in the future. There were many questions asked by the school board as to which is more beneficial, reduced half day classes or larger full day classes. Dr. Martin will be supplying more research data to assist the board in their decision.
